Northern Maine You could turn it down and save some money but you may not like the recovery performance for DHW. It also depends on if you have a high mass boiler with a tankless coil vs a low mass with an indirect DHW tank. Outdoor reset controls can do this automatically since they intelligently analyze your heat loss verses the outdoor temperature and adjust the boiler firing accordingly to achieve the optimum temperature. Any modern install should have updated controls for energy efficiency. My system is a low mass boiler about 6 gallons with a DHW indirect tank. This winter I installed an Intellidyne heat manager the big brother to the Beckett one since I didn’t have the outdoor reset control. I got it for about bucks on ebay used.

Hot water backflowing into domestic cold water

Integrating water heating with a standard hot-air furnace is not possible; if you have a furnace, you have to stick with a stand-alone water heater. A copper-coil heat exchanger extends into the boiler, and water is heated as it flows through this coil. The problem with tankless-coil water heaters is that the boiler has to be hot to produce hot water.

In the winter in a cold climate, the boiler is hot much of the time and may not even need to fire up to supply hot water due to residual heat in the boiler. But during the summer the boiler is less likely to be hot, and the on-off cycling to heat water wastes a lot of energy. This is a separate insulated water tank that is heated using hot water from the gas- or oil-fired boiler.

Mar 16,  · Your hot water set up with your boiler, is called a tankless coil. Oil companies refer to it as a summer winter hook up. And they love people with them. $$$$$ in oil sales.

September 0 Comments There is nothing more frustrating when trying to run a hot bath than when your water heater keeps turning off. If your water heater pilot light will not stay lit, it is important to fix it immediately. There are many reasons your water heater igniter might turn itself off. This device detects whether your pilot light is on by generating a heat-powered electrical current. A faulty thermocouple can cause problems with your water heater not staying lit.

If you can light your pilot light, but the water heater pilot keeps going out, there are many possible causes.

We have an oil-fired boiler with a summer/winter hookup. It supplies very little domestic hot water. There seems to be a mix of hot & cold coming from the hot water .

View steveinpa’s Album Yes, The furnace has a separate internal coil used to just to heat the hot water for faucets, etc. I guess my concern is the effect of hot water from the furnace coil used to fill the electric water heater. I’m not sure of the exact temp of the hot water. But, I do know that the hot water coming from the taps is very hot. The gallons per minute of hot water is not up to the new demands on this type of hot water system. But, while the hot water lasts, it is hot.

I’m thinking that in the winter time, when the furnace is cycling more often, that the water temp may be a bit higher. The temp of the water entering the water heater would be higher than actual water temp setting of the electric water heater. If it is ok to plumb the water supply in this way, then it would save electricity of the water heater.

I have gas heat in my current house now and am not familiar with how anything else works. This spells large oil bills to me, but again I don’t know much about oil heat. I’m in PA if this helps The background on this house is that it was built in It has an addition that put on in As far as I know, the house has had oil heat from day one.

Sep 02,  · The best way to handle your hot water IMO would be to add an electric hot water heater and valve it in with the boiler (Summer/Winter hook up called around here). The boiler would make the hot water in the winter. This would be cost efficient as the boiler would be hot from heating the home. In the summer the water would be heated by the water.

Hello, I am brand new here and glad I came across the forum. I am currently in the process of making a big decision and wanted to get as much info as possible. I have been in my house for about 4 years, and it was built in the s. I have oil heat. I have a Wells McClain furnace with a heating coil for hot water. I was told the furnace is 22 years old. Since living here I have always had limited hot water capacity, meaning when I am in shower, all it takes is for the kitchen sink to be open, even on cold, and the shower temp drops instantly.

We have avoided this by being careful, but now the problem is worse. I am have to turn the knob in the shower way up hot before the water gets warm, and while showering, I have to gradually turn up the knob to keep it warm. Once I bottom out the knob to hot, it sometimes gets cold, and sometimes I let it run and the burner comes on and it gets hot again.

This takes a long 10 minutes or so.

High Efficiency Boilers

A geothermal heat pump can be used for hot water, snow melt, ice-making, and even pool heating. Using a geothermal heat pump for hot water heating can actually make your heat pump even more efficient! A desuperheater captures the heat that is naturally lost by running the heat pump. As efficient as a geothermal heat pump is, there is a small amount of heat produced by the pump that is not used to heat your home. A desuperheater captures this expended heat and pumps it to the hot water tank.

Aside from the desuperheater you will not need any additional components.

A summer winter hookup is the most inefficient way to heat hot water. To understand why this is the case, you must first understand how a summer winter hookup works. During the summer, the boiler maintains the temperature of a reservoir within the boiler at degrees Fahrenheit.

Don’t get me wrong, the “regeneration’ isn’t gonna cost you as much as running the boiler all week, but will cut in to the ‘savings’ Let’s surmise you have a newer boiler Then, while you’re watching, turn it back on and time it for total run time to stop cycling and the system is hot Let’s guess, 30 minutes total run time to saturation temperature Have shower, do dishes, soak feet, whatever So, let’s say the total run time was 1 hour Well, this cut down on your overall oil use from keeping it hot for two days to only 1 gallon.

At some point, when you turn it on for the ‘need’, take a look at the chimney, and get an indication of the quality of the exhaust out the chimney You’re looking for a generally clear exhaust If you do have dark smoke, you’re sooting up the boiler, and as mentioned, cleaning will be more frequent. I carry no responsibility should the boiler start to leak You havta spend money to save it, technically

New Hampshire There are always heat losses from an oil-fired boiler when it is not running, and it is necessary to keep it hot if you are using it for water heating. That applies if you are using the tankless coil or an indirect water heater heated by the boiler. I installed a 40 gallon electric water heater connected into my hot water line after it leaves the tankless coil. So the electric is always in the line after the tankless coil, just cut the pipe and connect to the inlet and outlet of the electric water heater.

This is the simplest.

Earlier this month, I noticed something odd around the Fiction Fugitive homestead. The cold water was starting to run warmer. Time to call a plumber, some would say. Or time to buy a new water heater, for the hell of it, then call a plumber.

Oct 08,  · Re: Boiler summer winter hookup Or, a scale is building up in the coil, and you only notice the decrease in heat transfer in winter when the water is colder coming into the coil. What temp is .

During the first winter season, I noticed that the more my geothermal system ran to heat my home So I initially found myself increasing the thermostat temperature on both the upper and lower heating elements in my electric hot water heater to compensate and make the bath water hotter. When Spring arrived and the geothermal system was running much less, I found my hot bath water was scalding hot. I brought this to the attention of the original installer and he sent out his plumber to investigate We then took a wait-n-see approach until the following winter season when once again I found a noticeable drop in the temperature of the hot bath water exiting the Rheem electric hot water heater the more my geothermal system ran.

Measurements taken at that time were as follows before the tech touched anything: After determining that the pressure difference between the entering and leaving water pressure was too high, the tech adjusted the entering water pressure coming from my closed ground loop by reducing the incoming flow so that the pressure difference was somewhere between 2. This action resulted in the following revised readings the tech measured before he left: This brings me to the present with the onset of Spring this past year.
